Multi-step popups: when one screen isn't enough
Capture email then SMS then preferences in a single popup flow — without scaring visitors off.
A multi-step popup splits the ask across screens. Visitors see step 1, complete it, and step 2 only appears after they've committed. Conversion psychology: small yes leads to bigger yes.
Common multi-step flows
- Email → SMS → thank you. Email-first, then ask for SMS after they've already opted in.
- Email → preferences → thank you. Personalize their flow from step one.
- Quiz → email gate → recommendation. A discovery quiz that captures email mid-way.
- Spin-to-win → email-to-reveal-prize. Gamified opt-in.
Building a multi-step popup
- In the builder, click 'Add step' at the top of the canvas.
- Design each step independently — they can have totally different layouts.
- Set the transition trigger (typically 'on submit' of the previous step).
- Optional: add conditional routing — step 2 only shows for visitors who chose option A on step 1.
Multi-step gotchas
- Don't add a step just because you can. Each extra step drops conversion. Earn the right with value.
- Show progress (1 of 3, 2 of 3). Visitors hate not knowing how long they're committing to.
- Make step 1 the easiest one. Asking for email first works because it's a small commitment.
